TMLT gives back

TMLT’s mission is to protect and serve the physician community. And because of our commitment to this mission, we impact on more than just the medical community. By providing affordable, reliable medical liability coverage, and with the passage of tort reform, we help keep health care costs low and incentivize physicians to practice in Texas.

The success of our company has led to improved access to care for all Texans. This success also allows us to give back to the Texas community by supporting organized medicine, providing medical school scholarships, and donating to charitable causes.

Supporting organized medicine

TMLT partners with organized medicine to further improve health care for Texans. We do this through legislative advocacy and through sponsorships of county medical societies and specialty societies across Texas, including the Texas Medical Association.

By supporting organized medicine, we help physicians speak in a unified voice to make meaningful change.

TMLT is exclusively endorsed by 13 medical societies, including Bexar County Medical Society, Harris County Medical, Texas Academy of Family Physicians, and more. See the full list here.

Medical school scholarships

In 2006, we began our scholarship program for Texas medical school students. Our scholarships provide funds for those in need, but also encourages future physicians to learn about risk management early in their careers. Applicants are asked to read a case study and write about patient safety.

In total, we have awarded $265,000 in scholarships to Texas medical school students with 25 students awarded $5,000 and 14 students awarded $10,000.

Employee giving

Our discussion of employee fundraising would not be complete without recognizing the employees who organize all of our fundraising initiatives.

Each year employees form a “Team of Year” (TOY) and select a charitable organization to partner with and support. The team hosts fundraising events and activities and coordinates volunteer days. TMLT matches a portion of the amount raised at the end of the year.

Giving back is central to TMLT’s culture and helps build a sense of unity within our company. Over the past 10 years, TMLT and its employees have donated more than $83,000 to the following organizations:

  • United Way for Greater Austin
  • Susan G. Komen
  • The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas
  • Safe Place Austin (now Safe Alliance)
  • Austin Pets Alive!
  • Foster Angels of Central Texas
  • Meals on Wheels Central Texas
  • Wonders & Worries
  • Safe Alliance
  • The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas

The community we’ve built

TMLT employees are a family.

Everyone from the founding physician leaders to the current team of 160 employees, have worked together to transform TMLT from a fledgling start up to the leading writer of medical liability insurance in Texas.

As TMLT’s first president, John Lomenzo said, “From my point of view, TMLT has always been about people at all levels who worked with us, all having the right blend of talent, attitude, and commitment.”
